Why Go Phone Free?

Travelling without technology can be daunting. After all, Modern mobile phones are the ultimate multi functional tools – there’s almost nothing they can’t do! Most of us rely on technology to lend us a helping hand when travelling, especially the use of our phones. Phones can help us find our way in an unfamiliar town, brush up on the local lingo and keep us entertained during downtime. However, while our phones do offer many benefits, excessive phone use can have adverse effects on both our physical and mental health.

Why Camping?

We believe the great outdoors is the ideal environment for a digital detox. Whether you’re into wild camping or prefer to camp at site, there’s no better backdrop for switching of and recalibrating than Mother Nature.

How Could it Benefit Me?
A Better Night’s Sleep

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware by now that too much screen time during the day equals poor quality rest* at night. This means even while camping, when surrounded by nature and natural light, our sleep can still be disrupted by the use of mobile phones. Take your next camping trip as an opportunity to reset your confused body clock. Leave the phone at home, rise with the sun and relax with the sunset, just as nature intended. You may find it to be the best night’s rest you’ve had in a long while!
A Chance to Truly Appreciate Nature

While phones are great for snapping pics of your adventures, they can also hinder you from really immersing yourself in the moment. When we are met with a great view, it’s almost a natural reaction to get out our phone and take a picture, but by doing this, we are not allowing ourselves to be truly present. It’s time to stop fretting about capturing the perfect ‘insta-worthy’ snapshot and focus on creating great memories instead. Next time you go camping, leave the phone at home and enjoy all nature has to offer. Without any technology to hold you back, you have the opportunity to fully connect with your surroundings. Instead of stopping to take a picture of that awesome view, stop and take a moment to enjoy and appreciate it. Taking time to pause and really connect with your surroundings could even help to improve your mood*, clear your head and reduce your stress levels.

Improved Relationships and Quality Time

We’ve all been there, we’re trying to tell a friend an interesting story, but all the while we are waiting for them to look up from their phone. Perhaps you’re guilty of this yourself… you know you should give the person speaking your full attention, but you just can’t resist a cheeky glance at your screen. Aside from being a tad rude, this kind of behaviour can actually be harmful to relationships. By dividing your attention between the person speaking and your phone, you are essentially showing them that you are not that interested in what they have to say. So, whether you are guilty or not of this bad habit, some ‘phone free’ time could be more necessary than you think!

It’s understandable that camping totally phone free may be daunting for some. If your friends and family are apprehensive about the idea, suggest that phones be brought along but kept for emergencies purposes only. Get your camping buddies to agree phone will be kept out of sight for the duration of the trip. Make sure that during downtime you have some fun, phone free activities planned to keep everyone entertained. Things like campfire storytelling and classic card games are great options, not to mention totally free”!

A More Peaceful Mind

Our phones can do amazing things. They can connect us with parts of the world we would otherwise never see, but they also allow us to constantly compare ourselves to others. Our phones give us a constant and persistent reminder that someone, somewhere is doing something more exciting and seemingly having more fun than we are. Camping without a phone gives us the chance to break free from that mindset. Without the opportunity to compare to the non-attainable and unrealistic lifestyles of others, we are simply allowed to enjoy what is right in front of us.
