How to Fit a Thule Roof Box

Thule is a brand widely recognised for its high quality lifestyle products. Thule offer several roof box ranges, each targeted towards different lifestyle needs. So whether you’re a keen outdoor sport enthusiast or an active family in need of some extra luggage space, there is a roof box in the range for you. Every Thule roof box has been designed to ensure fitting is easy, safe and quick. Read on to find out how to fit your Thule roof box*

*When you purchase a roof box from our Lancashire workshop, a member of our team will be happy to fit it for you, or instruct you on how to fit it yourself.

Before You Buy and Fit

Before purchasing or installing a roof box, you’ll need to make sure it is compatible with your car’s roof rack. If you purchase a roof box from our store, we can advise you on this. You can also find out this information on our website: simply find your roof box in our range and click the ‘technical information’ tab to view a list of compatible Thule roof bars.

If your roof rack is not a Thule model you will need to verify it’s compatibility with your dealer. However, most Thule roof boxes will fit a broad range of roof racks, including factory fitted cross bars.

Once you have made sure your roof box is compatible with your roof rack you can begin fitting it. Our guide is a simplified version of the instructions provided with your roof box. We recommend reading over these instructions before attempting to fit your roof box.

Step one:

Your roof box has two grooves on the bottom, use these to guide the roof box onto the rack. You may need someone else to help you lift the roof box. You may also require a stool to reach the top of your car.

Once placed on the rack, the roof box should sit straight with each groove parallel.

Step Two:

Supplied with your roof box you should find four roof bar securing brackets. These may either be fitted to your roof box already or require slotting into position depending on the model. To slot the brackets into position lift the roof box lid and locate the slots. There should be four slots positioned in each corner of the roof box. Push the bracket through the slots and tighten each one anti clockwise until you head an audible click. The bracket should not touch the cars roof. If this occurs this may be because the roof box is not compatible with the roof rack. The roof bar should be central within the brackets claws. If your roof box is already fitted with the brackets follow the same process to tighten each bracket around the roof bars.

Step Three:

Your roof box is now ready to load. Before adding cargo to the box, check your vehicles roof load capacity. You can find this in your vehicle user manual or on your vehicle manufacturer’s website. Overloading your roof box will create a hazard for you and other road users.

Step Four:

Once you have loaded your roof box you can now close the lid. There should be nothing preventing the lid from closing fully or any items protruding from the box. Once you have closed the lid it will need to be secured with the key. If the roof box is fitted with a central locking system the key cannot be removed unless all locking points are secure. To secure simply turn the key right towards the lock symbol and remove. If the key cannot be removed check all locking points to ensure they are secure.
